After your tattoo

Tattoos are a beautiful form of self-expression, but they're also a commitment. Ensuring they heal properly is vital, not only for the aesthetic appeal but also for your health. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to take care of your new tattoo:

1. Initial Cleaning and Care

  • Cleanliness is Crucial: After removing the bandage, the first step is to rinse off any ointment and excess ink. Using warm water and an unscented anti-bacterial soap, gently clean the area. Pat it dry, don’t rub!

  • Saniderm: While it's beneficial to allow your skin some air, dirty or potentially harmful environments are everywhere. For this reason, your artist will protect your tattoo with a sterile non-adherent bandage. Our studio advises leaving your bandage on for 6 days. Should the seal break, please call the studio and we will re-bandage your artwork.

  • When you’re ready to remove your bandage. Do so gently under running water.

2. The Ointment Phase

  • Choose the Right Product: There are several effective products out there, but we recommend Hustle Butter.

  • Application: Apply the ointment sparingly. Excessive amounts can hinder the healing process. A thin layer over the tattoo, dabbing off any excess, should suffice. This routine should be done two to three times a day until you notice your skin beginning to peel or flake.

  • Precautions: Remember, your tattoo is an open wound. Treat it with care, avoiding activities that may introduce contaminants like swimming. It's also crucial to be mindful of environments that could infect or irritate the tattooed area.

3. Transitioning to Lotion

  • Start When Peeling Begins: As soon as your skin starts to peel, switch from ointment to a fragrance-free lotion. Apply it two to three times daily, or whenever your skin feels dry.

  • Be Mindful of Acne & Irritation: Should you notice acne breakouts or skin irritation, it might be a sign to reduce the lotion application. If scabbing develops, exercise caution. Over-moisturizing can be harmful, and it's essential not to pick at scabs as this can lead to scarring.

4. Resuming Daily Activities

  • Easy Does It: Even if your tattoo looks healed, it's a good idea to wait a couple of weeks before diving back into strenuous activities. Anything that might stretch or irritate the skin should be approached with caution.

  • Protect Against the Sun: Sun exposure is a tattoo's nemesis. It can fade and distort the ink. Whether you're sunbathing or using artificial tanning methods, always apply sunscreen as directed by your chosen product.

5. Long-Term Maintenance

  • Your tattoo's longevity largely depends on how well you look after your skin throughout your life. Keep factors like diet and hydration in mind when creating a skincare routine.

In conclusion, taking care of your tattoo is an essential part of ensuring its beauty remains intact. With proper care and attention, your ink will remain a vibrant testament to your individuality for years to come.
